The College Board: Connecting Students to College Success
The College Board is a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is
to connect
students to college success and opportunity. Founded in 1900, the association
is composed
of more than 4,700 schools, colleges, universities, and other educational organizations.
Each
year, the College Board serves over three and a half million students and their
parents, 23,000
high schools, and 3,500 colleges through major programs and services in college
admissions,
guidance, assessment, financial aid, enrollment, and teaching and learning. Among
its bestknown programs are the SAT®, the PSAT/NMSQT®, and the Advanced
Placement Program®
(AP®). The College Board is committed to the principles of excellence and
equity, and that
commitment is embodied in all of its programs, services, activities, and concerns.
Equity Policy Statement
The College Board believes that all students should be prepared for and have an
opportunity
to participate successfully in college, and that equitable access to higher education
must be a
guiding principle for teachers, counselors, administrators, and policymakers.
As part of this,
all students should be given appropriate guidance about college admissions, and
provided
the full support necessary to ensure college admission and success. All students
should be
encouraged to accept the challenge of a rigorous academic curriculum through enrollment
in college preparatory programs and AP courses. Schools should make every effort
to ensure
that AP and other college-level classes reflect the diversity of the student population.
The
College Board encourages the elimination of barriers that limit access to demanding
courses
for all students, particularly those from traditionally underrepresented ethnic,
racial, and
socioeconomic groups.
For more information about equity and access in principle and practice, please
send an
email to apequity@collegeboard.org.

Federal and State AP Exam Fee Assistance –
The 2006 AP Exam fee and the College Board's fee reduction: In 2006, the fee for
each AP Exam is $82. Schools keep $8 of this fee as a rebate for administering
the examinations. For each AP Exam taken by students from low-income families,
the College Board will provide a $22 fee reduction and schools are expected to
forgo the $8 administration fee; thus, the AP Exam fee for qualifying students
is $52 per exam. How does a student qualify for the College Board's fee reduction?
The College Board follows the economic-need guidelines created by the federal
government. The 2006 Fee Reduction Policy, which includes a chart for AP Coordinators
to use in determining a student's eligibility for a fee reduction, is sent to
AP Coordinators several times during the academic year. In addition, this document
is available on AP Central® (http://apcentral.collegeboard.com). All students
who meet the eligibility criteria are entitled to the College Board's $22 fee
reduction.
What additional federal and state fee reductions are available for students in
my state? Listed below are various additional fee reductions that states provide
for students. Note that each state determines whether or not students qualifying
for the College Board's fee reduction attending private schools, in addition to
those attending public schools, are eligible for additional fee reductions through
federal and state grants. Updates to State’s fee reduction policies will
appear on AP Central at http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/ap/statefeepolicies.
