Chapter 27: The Path of Empire

1.  Trace the transition from isolation following the end of the Civil War, to the drive for Empire. What was the effect of the Yellow Press, Alfred Thayer Mahan and the Big Sister policy?

2.  How did the Venezuelan border dispute become a challenge to the Monroe Doctrine and how was this handled?

3. How did we take Hawaii and what was the role of Sugar in this?

4. How did we become involved in the war with Spain? What was the role of the Yellow Press, Wall Street and America’s drive for empire?
5.  How did we treat Cuba and how did this compare with the way we treated the Philippines?

6. Trace the decline of the Spanish Empire in the Americas.

7. After effects in the Philippines. Describe.

8. How did we treat Puerto Rico and Cuba after the war?

9. How did Hay keep the door to trade open in China and what was the effect?

10. Trace TR’s use of the Big Stick in extending the Monroe Doctrine. (Trace the development of the canal and the Bad Neighbor Policy.)

11. How did Teddy earn the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906?

12. Describe turn of the century US Japanese relations.

Chapter 28:

Progressivism and the Republican Roosevelt

1. Trace the rise of the Progressives Movement and it’s purpose.

2. Who were the Muckrakers and what was their impact?

3. As a middle class movement, what reforms did the Progressives bring about at the Federal level? At the State and local level?

4. Describe Progressive battles in Labor and Temperance.

5. How did Progressive President TR begin to reign in Big Business?

6. What progressive reforms were geared toward protecting consumers?

7. How did Progressives attempt conservation?

8. What was the impact of this government ‘abandonment’ of Business?

9. Assess Taft’s record as a Progressive and Trust Buster.

10. What was Taft’s foreign policy? Explain Dollar Diplomacy.

11. How did the rift in the Republican party develop and what was the effect of this?

Chapter 29:

Wilsonian Progressivism at home and abroad:

1. Describe campaign 1912 and Justify the Democratic victory.

2.  How did Wilson attack the triple wall of privilege: tariffs, banks and trusts?

3. What other progressive acts were passed by Wilson?

4. How did Wilson roll back the foreign policy of the Repbulicans?

5. Describe Wilsonian policy in the Caribbean and Mexico.

6. As war broke out in Europe, how did Wilson practice neutrality in heart and mind while pushing preparedness?

7. How did businesses and banks begin to drive American Foreign policy in WWI?

How did this lead us into war?

8. How did Wilson finally lead the US into war and why? (peak ahead into chapter 30- through the Zimmerman note and declaration of War)

7. Describe the western front of WWI and America’s role in turning the tide.

8. How did the Versailles peace set the stage for future problems?

9. How did Wilson win the war but loose the peace (at home)?

10.  Describe the post war disillusionment and its effect on the election of 1920.
