Rise of Mass Democracy.

 

1. What was the corrupt bargain and what did it mean for politics in the 1820s?

2. Why wasn’t John Quincy Adams any happier in the White House than his father had been? Or: why is every Adams doomed to be a One Termer?

3. Why did the nation go Whole Hog for Jackson in ’28?

4. Explain the battle over the Tariff of Abominations.

5. Who were the Nullies, what was their issue? Where were the roots of this battle and where might it lead? (Precedent and future applications?)

6. Describe the trail of tears.

7. What was the Bank War, who won and why?

8. Describe the battle between Jackson and Clay in 1832.

9. What happened to the nation’s banking system between 1832 and 1837? What were we left with and what was the impact of this?

10. A third party!! What is it and how did it fare in the 1820s and 30s?

11. Who was the little magician, how did he get into office? Trace back to his relationship with Jackson and Calhoun. Don’t forget the Petticoat Wars.

12. Why was ‘Van Van a used up man’ by 1840? (Explain the failure of the dream of a second term for Matty Van.)

13. They say that Texas is like a “Whole ‘nother country.” Explain the background for the drive for Texas.

14. Describe the Lone Star Rebellion and why we did not immediately annex Texas.

15. How did Ole Tippecanoe move from the log cabin to the white house?

16. What happened to the 3rd party? How did we get back to the Two Party System?

17.Historiography: What was Jacksonian Democracy?

  1. Design a chart of the political parties, from 1789 through 1840.
  2. Set up a timeline on the Age of Jackson, from Jackson through Van Buren.

 

 

Chapter 14:  Forging the National Economy.

  1. Describe the westward movement of Americans, the geography and the pockets of economic specialty that rise up.
  2. Trace Irish and German immigration and the resulting rise in anti-foreignism.
  3. What was creeping mechanization and how was the factory system established?
  4. Describe the factory system, wage slavery and the plight of the factory girl.
  5. Describe western farming and the routes to ship goods to market and supplies westward.
  6. Trace the transportation revolution in canals and railroads.
  7. Describe the alternate modes of transportation and the influence of the transportation revolution on the economy.
  8. What was the market revolution?

  1. Another Great Awakening! Describe with the impact.
  2. Trace the Mormons from NY to UT. What unique problems did annexation of UT present?

  9. Describe Scientific progress in the early 19th century.

  14.  How did a national culture rise up in art, literature and ideas?
